Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Autism Deficit Hyperactivity Disordr is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood and involves psychological and behavioral features that can negatively affect all aspects of life, including school, work and relationships.

ADHD is characterised by symptoms of inattention, hyperavtivity and/or impulsivity.

Between childhood and adulthood the hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms tend to decrease and inattention symptoms become predominant.Treatments that target both biological and behavioural factors can be helpful, and evidence shows that outcomes are more effective when medication and behavioural treatments are combined. Approximately 1 in 20 adults are affected by ADHD, with many undiagnosed and untreated.

Autism (ASD)

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts cognitive, sensory, and social processing, influencing how individuals experience the world and connect with others. Every autistic person is unique, offering a rich variety of skills, qualities, interests, and personality traits.

Autism is currently estimated to affect 1 in 54 individuals*. It is not classified as a mental illness but rather a neurological difference, representing one of many variations of neurodiversity.

Combined Autism and ADHD (AuDHD)

Combined Autism and ADHD frequently coexist at notably higher rates, presenting unique challenges for adults with both conditions. The symptoms of each can overlap, which is why clinicians often screen for both during evaluations. Although research on adult autism and ADHD is limited, there is a general consensus among clinicians regarding best practices for assessing and treating patients with both disorders.

Adult Neurodiversity Assessments

At The Nelson Clinic, we offer streamlined assessment services to help you gain clarity around ADHD and Autism.

Our assessments are completed by experienced psychologists and nurse practitioners, using evidence-based tools and a structured approach. If treatment or further support is recommended, we can connect you with our neurodiversity coaching, therapy, or psychiatry teams.

We provide comprehensive assessments to explore whether ADHD and/or Autism may be contributing to your experiences. This includes understanding how symptoms present in your day-to-day life and ensuring other possible explanations are carefully considered.

As part of the assessment, we gather information such as:

  • Developmental history

  • Educational history

  • Family history

We also use a combination of clinical interviews, observation, and standardised questionnaires to support an accurate and well-informed outcome.

Assessments are primarily conducted online, with limited in-person appointments available in Christchurch.

Adult Neurodiversity Assessment Process

Step 1

Initial Questionnaires

You’ll begin by completing a series of questionnaires designed to help us understand how you think, feel, and function in daily life. These look at areas such as attention, emotional regulation, and behaviour.

Step 2

Assessment Appointment

You’ll then have an online assessment with a psychologist or nurse practitioner. This is an opportunity to talk through your experiences in more detail and explore whether ADHD and/or Autism may be relevant.

Follow-up appointment
Once your report is complete, we offer a follow-up session to go through your results and answer any questions.

Step 3

Coaching and Therapy

You do not need an assessment to access our coaching and talk therapy.

If you would like ongoing support, we offer ADHD coaching and talk therapy.

  • ADHD coaching focuses on practical strategies to manage day-to-day challenges

  • Talk therapy provides space to explore your experiences, including things like anxiety, trauma, or life transitions

Step 4

Medication Consultation

If ADHD is diagnosed, you may choose to book a medication consultation with our psychiatry team to explore treatment options.
